Stopping Crabgrass Before It Takes Over

Crabgrass is one of the most aggressive and frustrating weeds Cache homeowners deal with every summer. This low-growing invader spreads outward from a central root in a distinctive star pattern, quickly colonizing bare spots, thin turf, and hot areas along sidewalks and driveways. Once it gets a foothold, it can overtake significant portions of your lawn in just one growing season.

Because crabgrass is an annual that dies with the first hard freeze but drops thousands of seeds before it goes, prevention is critical. We apply pre-emergent herbicides in early spring to create a barrier in the soil that prevents germination. For any crabgrass that manages to break through, we follow up with targeted post-emergent treatments during active growth. This combination approach disrupts the life cycle and gives your turf a chance to thicken naturally and crowd out future invasions.

Eliminating Nutsedge from Cache Lawns

Nutsedge—often called “nutgrass”—is a major problem in Oklahoma lawns, and Cache is no exception. At first glance it looks like grass, but it’s actually a sedge with distinctive light green, glossy leaves and a growth rate that’s noticeably faster than your turf. You’ll see it poking up above your freshly mowed lawn within just a couple of days.

Yellow and purple nutsedge are both common in this area, and they’re extremely difficult to control because of their underground tuber systems. Pulling them out by hand is useless—the tubers remain in the soil and simply send up new shoots. We use specialty herbicides designed specifically for sedges, which target the plant’s unique biology without harming your grass. With a series of well-timed treatments and proper lawn maintenance practices, we can gradually reduce nutsedge pressure and help you regain control of your yard.

Managing Broadleaf Weed Invasions

Broadleaf weeds are easy to identify—they have wide, flat leaves that stand out from your grass, and many produce noticeable flowers or seed heads. Throughout Cache, we commonly treat dandelions, clover, chickweed, plantain, oxalis, spurge, wild garlic, and wild onion infestations.

These invaders come in two types: annuals that complete their life cycle in a single season, and perennials with deep, established root systems that return year after year. Both compete aggressively with your turf for water, nutrients, and sunlight, gradually weakening your grass and creating thin, bare areas that invite even more weeds. We use selective herbicides that eliminate broadleaf plants while leaving your grass unharmed, timed carefully based on weather conditions and weed growth stages. Combined with a strong fertilization program, this approach strengthens your turf and helps it naturally resist future invasions.

Controlling Wild Violets and Other Shade-Loving Weeds

Wild violets may look attractive when they flower, but they’re aggressive colonizers that can take over large sections of lawn—particularly in shaded, moist areas where grass naturally struggles. They spread through both seeds and underground runners, forming dense mats that choke out desirable turf.

In Southwest Oklahoma, wild violets often explode after periods of good rainfall, and they’re notoriously resistant to typical homeowner weed killers. Their waxy leaf coating repels most herbicides, and their deep root systems make them difficult to eliminate permanently. We use professional-grade products applied during strategic windows—typically fall or cooler weather periods—when the plants are most vulnerable. This isn’t a quick fix, but with persistent, properly timed treatments, we can gradually push them back and help your grass reclaim those problem areas.
