Wasp, Hornet & Yellow Jacket Control for Safer
Outdoor Living

Stinging insects are a fact of life in Oklahoma, but nests built too close to people create real problems. Paper wasps under the eaves, yellow jackets in the ground by the playset, hornets in a tree near the driveway, carpenter bees tunneling into your porch—suddenly your yard doesn’t feel safe for kids, pets, guests, or customers.

Boots Pest & Weed Control provides safe, effective control of stinging insects for homes and small businesses throughout Elgin, Lawton, and the greater Southwest Oklahoma area. We identify the specific insect, treat and remove active nests when possible, and help prevent them from returning to the same spots year after year.

Common Stinging Insects Around Elgin & Lawton

In our region, homeowners most often deal with:

  • Paper wasps – Build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and play structures.
  • Yellow jackets – Often nest in the ground, in wall voids, or in other enclosed spaces. Known for aggressive behavior when their nest is disturbed.
  • Hornets (including bald-faced hornets) – Create large, enclosed, football-shaped nests in trees, shrubs, and sometimes on building overhangs.
  • Carpenter bees – Bore round holes into unpainted or weathered wood (porch rails, fascia boards, deck posts) and can weaken structures over time.
  • Mud daubers – Build small mud nests on walls and ceilings. Generally less aggressive but still unwelcome around entries and living spaces.

Each of these insects requires a slightly different approach in terms of timing, products, and nest removal.

Indoor & Outdoor Flea & Tick Treatments

Effective control starts with knowing what we’re treating and where they’re nesting. During your visit, your technician will:

  • Inspect eaves, soffits, gutters, and fascia boards for visible nests
  • Check decks, railings, fence posts, swing sets, and sheds for activity
  • Look for ground nests in landscaping, near sidewalks, and around foundations
  • Identify carpenter bee activity in wood rails, siding, or trim

Once we understand the species and nest locations, we’ll explain the plan for safe treatment and removal.

Safe Nest Treatment, Removal & Prevention

Depending on the situation, we may:

  • Apply fast-acting treatments directly to nests at appropriate times of day
  • Remove treated nests when it’s safe, limiting the chance of reuse and improving appearance
  • Treat voids, gaps, or entry points used by yellow jackets or other cavity nesters
  • Address carpenter bee galleries and recommend repair or painting/staining of damaged wood
  • Suggest preventive maintenance, such as sealing structural gaps and adjusting trash and food storage practices

Our focus is on protecting you, your family, and your visitors while minimizing impact on beneficial pollinators.

Stinging Insect Control FAQs

What’s the difference between wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets?

Paper wasps build open comb nests, yellow jackets often nest in the ground or wall voids and tend to be more aggressive, and hornets build enclosed paper nests, often in trees or on structures. Each requires a specific treatment strategy.

Is it safe to spray a nest myself?

DIY sprays can be risky, especially for larger nests or yellow jacket colonies. Disturbed insects may swarm and sting repeatedly. Professional treatment is safer and more thorough, particularly when nests are high, hidden, or in difficult locations.

Can you remove the nest after you treat it?

Yes, in most cases. Once the nest has been treated and activity is neutralized, we can remove accessible nests for both safety and aesthetics. For nests deep inside structural voids, our focus is on eliminating the colony and sealing or deterring future nesting.

What about carpenter bees? They don’t live in big nests, right?

Correct. Carpenter bees tunnel into wood, creating individual galleries. We treat active galleries and recommend repairs, sealing, or painting/staining to discourage future activity and protect the wood.

Will your treatments harm honey bees?

Our goal is to target problem stinging insects (wasps, hornets, yellow jackets) while minimizing impact on beneficial pollinators like honey bees. If you know of active bee colonies nearby, let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Do I need ongoing service for stinging insects?

Stinging insects build new nests each year. While a one-time treatment addresses current nests, regular service allows us to catch new nesting activity early and treat it before it becomes a bigger problem.
